Hi All,

Can anyone explain how and why a Queen bee can produce a strange sound
which seems to come from her mouth?

Two days ago I was in the process of introducing a new Queen to a
colony. While in the process I released the Queen, and some workers started
to attack her.At this point I rescued her,and she apparently was shook
up,and started making this sound.
I held her in my fist while retrieving the Queen cage while she kept making
this sound until I placed her back into her cage.At this point she quieted
down.

Today I released her again with the use of some sugar water, and she
remained quiet while not being attacked by workers.

It seems that she made the sound because of being frightened. I have never
seen this before, and wonder how often this might happen.
