I often point this out to groups.  All are fascinating insect societies.
But when we kill them, we generally attempt to do it quickly and cleanly.

Obviously, the concept of  allowing animals under your care to die a slow
and ugly (and completely preventable) death does not bother some.  But it
does me, and many others.

Some who practice animal husbandry feel strongly about this, and have
published codes for ethical treatment of livestock.  Both Organic
certification, as well as the Grass Roots Farmers Cooperative, require that
treatment of livestock must be implemented to control parasites.
