Today I opened up one of my hives and heard the distinct 'piping' from
the hive. The Buckfast queen from last year was readily found but I
couldn't find any other queens nor queen-cells.

Would a queen start piping from a slight lingering smell from handling
another queen? Or other possibilities?

Thanks for your input,
