Hi,
 
Just an aside which may or may not be useful. I use a dial-up PPP link
and run a pretty good public domain package known as ka9q. This supports
all the usual stuff (mail, ftp, telnet, rlogin etc. etc.) and seems pretty
robust. My service provider uses Morning Star.
