Virgin queens have to have a fed of honey and pollen short after emerging otherwise they only live for an hour or so.
 
If you are emerging V queens into cages, scrape down a pollen frame and mix some honey and pollen together and put a couple of drops in each cage.  Add a little to the side of the cage each day and they should survive a week or more provided they are kept warm.
