Not here to sell books, but a recent offering explores the limits and liabilities of natural selection and how evolution can favor the odd balls, the uneconomical, the out-of-date, and the inefficient.  In a nutshell, predators usually lose and parasites usually win.  It's a great read with a nice bibliography.
