Thanks all for your responses on and off list.

I bought two weather thermometers with remote probes from Radio Shack this
morning.  They both read several degrees low, and a half a degree
different--so much for accuracy.

Nevertheless, I stuck them into the honey at the edge of a cluster, about
1.5 inches apart, and watched the differences in temperature between
them--started at 5 degrees F in the morning, and went to 12 degrees
difference by midday.

I moved them closer together just before dark, and left the hive open at
top to the frosty night.  Will check the gradient in the morning when temps
have stabilized.
