I guess that keeps him running so the bees don't suffocate, or does the CO2 
build-up pacify the bees -- to your advantage?

Ah ha!  There is the trick.  No wonder different people have differing 
success!

I imagine it would pay to classify different brands for particle size under 
a microscope.

There may be differing moisture levels, too, which could be easy to 
determine by weighing, drying, then weighing again.

The plot thickens...

As with everything to do with mites, the devil is in the details.
