I would like to know the protocol for handling a hive that swarms while under a pollination contract. In other words, a hive is inspected by the grower, found to meet at least minimum standards, and is accepted. After the hive is placed in service it swarms to a degree that significantly diminishes its value for pollination.

Is the beekeeper responsible for making up this loss? Are hives repeatedly inspected for strength during a contract? I’ve read a number of sample pollination contracts and, at best, the terms seem vague. Also, what steps are beekeepers taking to prevent swarming during a contract? Any insight is most appreciated. Thank you.
