Better question is correlation causation? Much more relavant!  Not right to use the argument you posted.  That was knowledge before rhe test started.  Not a valid test if you started with a KNOWN handicap. 
If the goal was a valid test of rhe effects of any one thing, all other varibles must be controled. Thats basic science or problem solving.   If you doing test with multiple varibles the problem solving matrix gets a lot messier. In this case its quite obvios a simple known varible was allowed to run amuck.  In fairness inread it in one of the follow up papers from one of the authors not sure the mentioned it in the original.

Bottom line when you let a varible as huge and known as varro skew your results your at best sloppy. If you then try to use it as proof  I wonder whatvthe corect verbage for that is.  Maybe Dr. Lu at Harvard would know?
