I don't mark or number my hives. Instead, I keep record cards and number the queens. The cards have a space to record the apiary and also the lineage (if known) of the queen.  I keep current cards in a filofax and old ones in a suitcase.  The cards and system can be viewed on Dave Cushman's website: Beekeeping and Bee Breeding.
