My kit was in date (expiry December 2009).  Of course it is essential that the larva is an infected one.  This one was from under a capping, had collapsed and had the EFB smell.

My recollection of using similar kits (backed up by my wife who works in a company making such things) is that a very delayed faint line at the test position means nothing.  It was the same some years back when I used them to detect GM admixture in samples of seed.

There was absolutely no hint of a 'test' line after the three minutes suggested, a neither was there any 30 mins later.  We did the test in a warmed room as the test specified 18C.   Over seven hours later there was a faint line, but the instructions say 'Wait until the control line appears then read the result (c.1-3 minutes)'.
