In my hives with mostly 8-frame mediums, I see the bottom box become all pollen except for the height of the season when there is some brood, then the next 2 to 3 mediums are brood. The 4th medium is usually honey but I do see some brood centered there (no excluders). I have a couple of colonies with one deep in the mix and have noted that the queen ends up there whether it is on the bottom or middle when they start limiting brood after the flow.
