You are absolutely right Peter!  CCD is defined as a sudden collapse due to
loss of the adult population, when brood and food are present--not the
typical winter mite/virus scenario that you are accurately describing.  The
same happens in my snowy California winter, and even in warmer areas in fall
and winter.  The symptoms you describe are quite familiar to California
beekeepers, and to most researchers.
