I'm not sure where you propose to place a camera inside the hive...you might look at "Tales from the Hive" produced by Nova:

they used all kinds of custom equipment to do what they did, but it might give you some ideas.

I've purchased a Kodak Zi8, which shoots hi def (and even 60fps!) and is sub $200.  The lens is a fixed focus instamatic type, but it does have a macro mode.  Given the price, the videos can be stunning.  Here is a link to the entrance of a hive played back at 1/5 speed in HD:
