I think Randy is meaning there is no cause and effect link, however, the
two have an associative link, probably due to the fact that the same
conditions which tend to cause one also tend to cause the other.

In other words, each has a cause/effect relationship (not nearly 100%)
with the same circumstances, but not with one another.
