Yes.  I once placed a queen in a cardboard (not wood!) matchbox on the alighting board of a queenless colony.  The box was open enough for tongue to tongue contact but not enough for workers or queen to get in or out. I sat and watched as the bees took about 20 minutes to chew the matchbox enough for the queen to escape. She walked calmly straight into the hive where she was accepted.
