I have decided to try to discourage them.  Internet searches reveal two interesting techniques:

Chilli powder which also gets rid of cats, rabbits and squirrels; I have ordered a kilo!
Scent marking.  Apparently badgers scent mark their territory, but human scent marking will repel them.  I am currently drinking plenty of water and beer...
