Simplest one I have seen that's portable is a tripod about 9 feet high with
a pulley hanging scale and two loop type straps.

If there heavy hives you could subsititue a block and tackle for a pulley.
Worked on any ground and is cheap.  400lb hanging scales ae on ebay for
about 60.00
