Very persistent is probably a matter of personal opinion.  In most soils glyphosate has a half life of about one month.  In some soils it is less than this and in others it is greater than this.  It really is of very little concern how long the half life is as in soils containing any clay the glyphosate is very tightly bound and incapable of migrating.  That is why the stuff has no soil activity as a herbicide.  Thus it can not migrate into streams from sprayed fields.

 The World Health data on its cancer causing potential shows it is about the same human cancer risk as working mid night shift.  That is if you believe their suspect data.
