Come spring, he can pay $100 for packages, for a net gain of $60/hive, over what he already made for his main honey harvest.  This strategy apparently works for some.


True!   I only know one doing that on a regular basis,  but I have bought his shakeout bees and can tell you they are pretty dang clean.  Normaly spring packages up here are not collapsing by fall.  They do okay until the following season up here where brood rearing stops.
