The Occupy Wall Street crowd protesting the way things are now may be
benefitting from the way things were in Vermont a century ago, when a Barre
physician began prescribing a cure for what ails us.

Dr. DeForest Clinton Jarvis, a fifth-generation resident of the Green
Mountain State raised in Burlington, recommended apple cider vinegar and
honey to treat everything from arthritis to bad breath. His 1958 book, “Folk
Medicine: A Vermont Doctor’s Guide to Good Health,” was on The New York
Times bestseller list for two years.

Flash forward to 2011. Shaista Husain, a self-taught Occupy Wall Street
herbalist, is concocting the Jarvis mixture — commonly known as “switchel”
or “honegar” — for demonstrators, many of whom have been camped out in Lower
Manhattan since mid-September.
