We've wondered the same.  And we were told that some researchers have  said 
that simply treating withmacerated bees can cause a loss.  That's why  we 
used macerated bees, bees gut macerations, and nosema extracts (spun down  
with centrifuge).  We got same results from all three.  (Caged bees in  lab).
 
That said, I am not in favor of smashing lots of bees, swapping brood  
frames, or adding package bees to failing colonies.
