As a former sheep farmer and fat lamb producer I can tell you that legumes are very critical to production of these animals. One can feed some nitrogen to help but for overall health they are nearly impossible to get by without. I bought alfalfa seed and sweet clover seed on a regular basis back then. And feral bees were abundant so my clover pastures thrived.
