I am looking for advice or any helpful tips on indoor wintering. I am located in upstate NY. On average we get 100 inches of snow per winter and a couple weeks of -20f. The snow and cold dont seem to be the problem, its the wind. Very windy here most all winter.
I have been moving the bees south for the winter but I do not like to travel and I still believe the fewer times the bees are disturbed the better they do.
Most all the hives are on 4 way pallets using w clips so they have a half inch gap between. If I were to do it all over they would be the u clip or separate bottom boards on warehouse pallets so they can be pushed together. All equipment has been wax dipped including the pallet. Covers are 3/4 in plywood with a 3/8 inch rim and 1.5 inch entrance along with a feeder hole in top center. The biggest problem I have seems to be moisture. It is very hard to position the pallet so that one side does not hold water. I have made drain holes, bees fill them in. I have approx 100 hives still here in NY and I am trying a variety of things to see what winters best. One test is moving approx 30 inside one of my buildings that is completely dark and shaded all day during winter months. So what i am looking for is any input from anyone that has done this.
Hope I did this message the correct way, only been a reader till now. Thanks
