No treatment and genetics:

This a good point to show that there is genetics for mite resistance. Those bees can survive without any chemicals. This resistance might be shown at a small scale operation faster due to reduced rate of re-infection, specially in isolated apiaries.

On the hand we need to consider there are non treatment individuals buy every 1-2 years package bees to replace dead outs. In this case the package bees treated for that year by the package producers. We found in Alberta that package bees from areas infested with mites can survive in most cases first year without treatment if the level of mites at installation is less than 1%.

This might explain why in CND regulation for bee imports to have less than 1% mite level in source colonies of package bees. This very low level of infestation will also help reducing the dispersal of resistance to used miticides. This requirement has made beekeepers treat colonies before making packages for export to ensure that bees accepted in Canada.
