Pete, how do you know your hives died because of mites?
Were you monitoring the mites, saw they occurred at high levels, but decided to "wait and see" and did not treat?
Or...is there some other reason you are sure your hives are dead because of mites?
Would like to know.

Hi Christina
I see I posted this last fall:

most of the currently advocated controls so that we can go back to
beekeeping rather than playing "Whack a Mole' with varroa.

I guess I am coming from the opposite pole, these days. If I can get alternative treatments such as breeding, drone brood culling, and essential oils (e.g. Thymol) to work, that's what I want to do. I admit, I am having a tough time of it, since the honey flow is just now ending and some hives have obvious mite disease (snotty brood). Probably already too late for some of them. This is a cat and mouse game I have played for a decade, it's discouraging but life is like that.
