Usually single brood and perhaps a couple of cm, but if we have 'spare' brood chambers at the end of the season then we double up for winter and split out again in the spring.  In that case the top box could be almost all stores depending on factors like the time that we double up, the weather for the remaining autumn etc.  For double brood we use a double dose, i.e. 2 lids on the excluder.
