I suggest most beekeepers would agree that smoke really stupefies the bees, 
louds their senses, and interferes with the odor system in the hive, by which 
nternal hive activities are regulated.


I rarely puff smoke into a hive, except when closing to herd them off the edges of the boxes so as not to squash them. Instead I allow a drift of smoke across the entrance until the guards go inside, so I don't think enough enters to act as you suggest, except maybe the guards.
