I, too, first heard Ligeti via 2001.  Ironically, he was one of the first
classical composers I became familiar with (along with both Strausses, also
on 2001) as I was a mere lad at the time, with limited musical exposure.
One of my first Classical Music Disappointments: after scrounging together
all my pennies to buy the complete Also Sprach Zarathustra - all of the
"excitement" was in the opening.

I find it amusing to note that Ligeti was also used by Kubrick in his last
picture, Eyes Wide Shut.  Used quite irritatingly, as a matter of fact!
