Linda- I agree that the Archaeological Conservancy is the best hope for
our future. They have been on to historic sites for a long time. "Way
back" in 1982 one of their early projects in New Mexico was the
aquisition and transfer of Fort Craig into public land protection (BLM).
The Western Regional Director, Lynn Dunbar, worked hard about seven
years ago to try to get protection for some historic mining districts in
Nevada, and she paid attention to some Pony Express, Central Overland
Stage sites. Unfortunately, the stars have not been in alignment but I
know the moment that there is evidence that there is a change in
position, the Conservancy staff will make the most skilled effort to do
right thing by both historic and prehistoric resources. I am not an
insider in the SHA organization but as a member I would support
permanent ongoing recognition for the work of the Conservancy and its
staff. What about a commitment for an annual contribution from SHA?
What about a $5 recommended, but optional annual contribution for each
SHA member at dues time earmarked to the Conservancy to be contributed
for efforts specifically on historic sites? -Mark
