In following on from Dr. Schuyler's last point, some of us at York
seriously considered bidding to bring the SHA conference to the UK. In
the end, our preliminary thoughts on this topic were scuppered by our
inability to find a large enough hotel in the second most visited tourist
city in the UK (no, really...) - not by the location, although that might
have presented challenges. Speaking of which...
I realise that the overwhelming majority of SHA members are currently
based in North America, and that overseas travel presents a financial
challenge to Federal and many State, Provincial and other civic employees,
but in the long term, would there potentially be interest in bringing the
annual SHA meeting to Europe? Not a special conference - I
specifically mean the main annual meeting. After all, if the SHA genuinely
sees itself as an international, rather than a North American,
organisation, then I would suggest that at some point the Society will
have to consider moving the conference location beyond North American and
Caribbean locations.
For what it's worth, the cheapest location for European archaeologists to
reach in the USA is New York. Boston isn't too bad, and the
other major cities of the East Coast Megalopolis are usually
doable. Unfortunately, the conference rarely takes place in the
off-season as the first week and a half or so of January falls under the
peak New Year flying season.
