The sonic fire-works, sharp wit, and timeless lyricism of Alvin Curran's
piano output comes to colorful life via New York composer/pianist Jed
Distler's probing, soulful interpretations. Distler's recital at Mills
College, Friday March 12th spans nearly two decades of Curran's piano
music in a program to be recorded for New World records. Works include
For Cornelius, Inner CIties #2, Hope Street Tunnel Blues Part One, The
Last Acts of Julian Beck, and the world premier of Inner CIties Nos.
6 & 7, written for Jed DIstler.

Called "an altogether extraordinary pianist" by Newark Star Ledger critic
Michael Redmond, Jed Distler's piano recitals encompass a wide spectrum
of 20th century music, including his own works. As artistic director
of ComposersCollaborative inc. (CCI), DIstler directs the performance
and discussion series Solo Flights and the NonSequitur summer festival,
which showcase a broad range of today's music by established and emerging
performers and composers. In 1997 he inaugurated Maybeck Recital Hall's
New Music Series in Berkeley, and participated in the CalArts/Bay Area
Pianists Henry Cowell Festival. Distler's toy piano suiteThree Landscapes
for Peter Wyer, recorded by Margaret Leng Tan, is available on the Point
label. He transcribed and arranged jazz legend Bill Evans's music for
Jean-Yves Thibaudet's Conversations with Bill Evans (London Records),
and is on the faculty at Sarah Lawrence College.

Curran's output for piano has not been documented to the same extent as
his electronic, enviornmental, and theatrical music. Yet his piano music
stands among the late twentieth century's most concentrated and expressive
works of their kind. Curran's keyboard writing is characterized by
hypnotic repeating patterns, minimalist gestures, bittersweet lyricism,
and probing concentration.

Jed Distler's forthcoming New World disc is the first all-Curran piano disc
specifically produced for CD release, including first recordings of Inner
Cities 1 & 2, Inner Cities 6 & 7 (written for Jed Distler), Hope Street
Tunnel Blues, and the revised version of For Cornelius.

Jed Distler and Alvin Curran will appear live on Sarah Cahill's weekly show
on KPFA-FM, Berkeley, Friday March 12 from 10:00 AM-12 Noon PST.
