Starting this Sunday at 4PM (British time) a new series will start on
BBC 3, now available via the BBC website; you need RealAudio to hear the
program on your computer.
The series is:
4:00pm
Discovering Music
A new long-running series exploring the great works of classical
music, using specially recorded examples to illuminate the textures
and deconstruct the music. In this first programme, Anthony Payne
unlocks the secrets of Elgar's Second Symphony with the help of the
BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Brad Cohen. Anthony Payne will
be the host. You recall that he is the composer who reconstructed
the Elgar Third Symphony, so much discussed in these precincts last
year.
I heard a snippet of the program and it promises to be very interesting.
The orchestra plays various parts of the Elgar Second, sometimes just one
section of the orchestra at a time, and Payne illustrates how the symphony
was put together. Fascinating.
