That's a great approach for music which leaves one cold after the first
hearing. My most vivid example involved a Scelsi 2-cd set of chamber music
on a now defunct label. After hearing it one time, I was frustrated and
ready to fling it over the close-by Sandia Mountains. But, I just put it
in a drawer and took it out to play about a month later. Sounded better.
Well, I kept up this regimen until I finally felt I had a good grasp on
this composer. Now, I love every recording of Scelsi's I can get my hands
on.
I do wonder if there's a lot of classical music fans who hear "unusual"
music one time, flee for the hills, and never return.
