I agree. Try also the recently-released disc of his cello works on
Naxos -- the Konzertstuck (rellay a cello concerto in all but name), the B
flat minor sonata and the Ruralia Hungarica Op. 32d for cello and piano.
Really good stuff -- the Konzertstuck is sort of like Dvorak written by
Khachaturian! ED gets low marks from critics for being unmoved by the urge
for modernism when he was in mid-creative career. I don't care -- it's
good music and I'm looking forward to more. Only 48 opus numbers in the
gut's catalog -- he was too busy teaching and conducting to compose, I
guess!
