Job Description

The individual will serve as the staff archaeologist at the Jasonville,
Indiana Field Office.  The archaeologist reviews all permit applications to
insure compliance with state and federal surface coal mining regulations and
historic preservation laws.  While the individual is an employee of the
Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, the primary duty station
is located in the Division of Reclamation Field Office in Jasonville,
Indiana.  Duties involve review of reports of investigations, evaluation of
the impacts of projects undertaken by the Abandoned Mine Lands section of
DOR, coordination with state and federal agencies, and provision of
information concerning cultural resources to those involved with coal
mining.  Limited field investigations and evaluation of the potential
significance of archaeological sites and historic properties are required as
part of the responsibilities.  Duties will periodically involve assisting in
field investigations undertaken by the Division of Historic Preservation and
Archaeology as well as those undertaken in association with coal mine
activities.

Job Qualifications

The applicant must meet the minimum federal and state requirements for a
professional archaeologist with a graduate degree (MA/MS) anthropology or a
closely related field, with a specialization in archaeology at the graduate
level and experience and research in Midwestern archaeology, with
substantive course work and practical experience in either cultural resource
management or public archaeology.  The applicant should have a working
knowledge of both historic preservation and federal and state surface coal
mining law and regulations, and tangible field, laboratory, and publication
experience in survey and excavation or contract archaeology.  The applicant
must  have a knowledge of archaeological research design development and
execution, statistics, and the ability to work with professionals within the
historic preservation and mining communities and relevant state or federal
agencies, as well as the general public.  A sound knowledge of and
experience in both prehistoric and historic archaeology is required.  A
basic knowledge of physical anthropology, specifically training and
experience with human skeletal remains, and historic burial practices is
desirable.  A working knowledge of computer operations and data base
management is desirable.

Salary:  $28,340 - 42,250
