My mother was given a collection of buttons around 1967 from a lady (Mrs
Johnson) then in her 80s. Among them were a number of plain lead buttons
with one or two holes through them. Mrs Johnson said that they were used to
weigh down dresses to stop them from blowing up 'in the olden days'. I have
never excavated any examples though.
