I am pleased to quote a report from the 4 October London "Times" about my
friend Liz Varlow:
A viola player with the London Symphony Orchestra who has been profoundly
deaf since she was a teenager will receive a prestigious prize for
overcoming her disability.
A string player who cannot hear seems a contradiction in terms, but Liz
Varlow, 31, who will receive the Frink Award next Monday, said her deafness
has not been an obstacle. "With the benefit of a fine aural memory, a
solid technique and a good sense of humour, I have been able to deal with
all professional situations and have found deafness to be little handicap,"
she said.
