Ever since Andrew Porter left TNY in Tina's bloodbath, I've not been very
fond of their musical reviews. He and Roger Sessions can talk about music
in the most poignant ways, without being professorial or pedantic. I've
found the most intelligent reviews of music (recorded) to the Fanfare
magazine, and the most intelligent (of performances as well as recordings)
to be American Record Guide. The worst in all these categories is
Gramophone. If ever there was a periodical needed to prove that British
can talk a hell-uva-lot and still not say anything, Gramophone should be
a classic example (its superlative graphics and layout notwithstanding).
