That's for sure. Just for memory's sake I played the Levi again this
morning on my surround sound set up. And again I was not impressed. I
find that my ears just as quickly "adjust" to the superior sound as they
do to the likes of Mengelberg's Beethoven recordings. By that I mean that
after a bit, I don't notice the great sound anymore. What's left when the
juice is turned off is just the performance. Good God, Mengelberg's April
14, 1940 recording of the Beethoven 3rd with the Concertgebouw sounds
damned awful. He loved booming bass, but in this live peformance it sounds
like someone is pounding a dead carp inside an oil drum. Still, it is a
wonderful performance and the "inner" ear quickly makes due. It's a
performance, unlike many others I own to which I go back frequently.
On another note, why are they allegedly going to issue the Levi recording
again with the repeat? Do they really feel an angry public out there?
