For button manufacture rather than typology see also D. P. White, The
Birmingham Button Industry in Post-medieval  Archaeology 11 (1977),
67-79 and S. Timmins (ed), _The Birmingham and Midland Hardware
District_, 1866. The latter is a marvellous source on mid C19 (mostly
little changed from the C18) manufacturing techniques in such trades as
buttons, toys, brass stamped wares, die sinking, guns etc
