Joseph Previte wrote concerning recordings of Haydn's piano sonatas:
>My preferred versions include the 4 disc Brendel set, Richter's on
>Decca, Pletnev on Virgin and various other individual performances.
I think Joseph's choices are excellent. I would just add Ax on Sony,
Ranki on Hungaroton, and Schiff on Teldec. As best I remember, no list
members have thought poorly of the two Ax recordings. I believe I'm the
only list member who commented on Ranki. As for Schiff, John Dalmas was
not impressed, but I thought Schiff was outstanding and in the Brendel
mode. I'd be interested in Joseph's view of Schiff/Haydn. As always,
"Different strokes for different folks".
