I am not a composer but I like different kind of music. For a composer,
usually, a symphony is a very important work... Nevertheless, some
composers don't mind, and their symphonies are lovely without being serious
at all. An example is Prokofiev...Each symphony is light as a symphonic
poem... Is not like Rautvaara's symphonies or even Beethoven, who
considered their symphonies as being a capital part of their whole work...
I think that the question is "what is your perception of a symphony?" Are
you willing to make a "grandieuse" composition or you want to stay more
reserved. You know. Actually, symphonies are considered a bit old fashion
because of the the variations influence (started by Shoenberg) and other
factors...(we like less structured compositions) How old fashion do you
feel? How do you consider your style? If you had to compare your music to
somebody's else who would be? Who do you admire? You want something very
elevated... think about Sibelius... His music is often as elevated as
depressing. Are you composing for a public or for yourself? Those are
in my point of view questions that could guide you to find the more
appropriate of answers... But YOU have to answer, YOU have to choose.
I am sorry about my English.
Regards,
Martin
