The results have now been announced for the Kathryn Thomas International
Flute Composition Competition 2000. The judges were very impressed by how
much diverse and exciting music was submitted to the competition from all
over the world, and would like to thank all of the entrants. Over 280
entries were submitted.
In the adult section the first prize has been awarded to Dai Fujikura for
his 'Ophelia' for solo flute. Dai Fujikura was born in Osaka, Japan in
1977. When he was 15 he came to Europe, and is presently studying at
Trinity College of Music, London, with Daryl Runswick.
Andrew Rindfleisch ('Tears'), Antanas Kucinskas ('Magic Flute'), and Jay
Anthony Gach ('Three Eclogues') and were highly commended. The school age
section was won by the young Chinese composer Zhou Tan for his 'Divergence
from the Usual Expression' for flute and piano.
Kathryn Thomas will be performing Dai Fujikura's 'Ophelia' at the Purcell
Room (South Bank Centre) on Friday 29 September 2000. The programme will
also include works by Philippe Gaubert, Sergei Prokofiev, Frank Martin,
Samuel Barber and Otar Taktakishvili. For more information about ticket
