I have recently gotten interested in Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder.
The only version I have heard is by Sawallisch conducting, I believe, the
Vienna Philharmonic, the version being a "new" one, with a more sparse
orchestration. (I am sure it was Sawallisch, but it could have been the
Philadelphia..)
It is truly beautiful. the CD also contains the overture to Die Feen,
Rienzi, and so forth.
I tried to obtain this CD from the Washington DC Tower Records, but was
told it is out of print.
Okay. What would be another good recording? There is a disk with Ferrier
singing Mahler, Flagstadt singing the W. Lieder, I believe, and another
lady (de la casa) singing one of the Ruckert Lieder.
There are recordings by Birgit Nilsson, I believe, Cheryl Studer, Eileen
Farrell, Jessye Norman, etc etc. Anyone have any definite preferences,
and why?
