No doubt in my mind: influence. Gershwin was thoroughly familiar with
late 19th-century and Romantic piano works in general. Among his musical
friends, he was admired for his Liszt, Chopin, and Bach, believe it or not,
although he never performed these works in public, as far as I know.
The interesting thing to me is how all this stew winds up sounding like no
one other than Gershwin.
