According to the naturalist, Annie Dillard, there are over 100,000
species of parasitic wasps, some of which are parasitic to the fifth
order, meaning that they live off other parasitic wasps.
The ichneumon deposits her eggs "in the body tissues of caterpillars,"
but if she cannot do this efficiently or in a timely fashion, says
Dillard (citing the entomologist Teale), she is consumed by her own
larva. Rather than have this happen, she will sometimes "scatter [her]
eggs while in flight."
