Personally, I urge you all to drop the term "Colonoware" with regard to plain
and lead-glazed Spanish and Mexican ceramics. There is ample literature to
demonstrate Spanish and Mexican potters followed local traditions. Russell
Skowronek is currently conducting Neutraon Activation Analysis on samples
from Baja California and Alta California Spanish and Mexican sites to
determine if the material is local. Out here, we get terms that range from
"Mission Crudware" to "Mission Series Brownware" to "Tizon Brown Ware" to
"Missionware" etc. and all those terms are open to hot debate. But what we
dont need is to confuse these fascinating traditions with the plain pottery
found on non-Hispanic sites in Southeastern U.S. That is my opinion.
