Several years ago, a large buried barrel, filled with architectural debris
and other items in the 1860s, was identified at an 1850s-1880s east-central
Iowa townsite (Bowen's Prairie), only 15 miles from the Dubuque County
border (Snow 1996). The barrel had a high degree of integrity with metal
barrel straps and wood intact. The barrel was a minimum of 1.5 m
top-to-bottom and approx. 2.4 m in diameter--really big. The most common
feature that incorporated large buried barrels like this would be a cistern
or well (Brown 1995; Rotenstein 1995; Walitscheck 1995). However, Hurry
(1995) suggested that a large buried barrel such as this may have been used
as a vat for scalding hogs. Another possible use would be as a tanning vat.
Given that only a small portion of the feature was excavated, exact
function was not determined. If you need more info., please contact me
off-list.
